Course Tutors: Dave Simpson & Diane Whitley

This course will study television techniques with the aim of writing a 30 minute script which can be used as a calling card to help get a commission for a returning series or soap opera (see soap opera course - June 6). There are very few openings for inexperienced writers in television; Diane and Dave will help break that barrier down by looking at possibilities such as series like Doctors, The Bill, Casualty and the soaps in general, as well as using Diane’s expertise as a Granada Kids producer. You will be expected to come with a thirty minute television idea which will be assessed by the tutors before you start working on it over the week. If you are just starting out to write or have sold theatre/radio plays but can’t break into television, this is the course for you.

Course Tutors: Dave Simpson & Diane Whitley

Radio is the one medium that is actively seeking new writers and new scripts. It needs an enormous output of new plays, including the 45’ afternoon play each day of the week, slots on Woman’s Hour, late night slots, the 60’ Friday night play, the 60’ Saturday afternoon play and classic adaptations. It is the one medium where writers starting out should aim their scripts.

The course will be a practical course, looking at how to create a strong story with dramatic incident and believable characters, as well as studying radio techniques. The students will be expected to work on a short radio play or extract of a longer play which will be recorded at the end of the week.
